What is a comparison report?
A comparison report compares sales periods against each other, usually Year-Over-Year or YOY. How do yesterday's or this week's sales compare to the same time period last year? Find out using a comparison report! What is the average revenue for a Mother's Day Brunch? Compare the last 5 Mother's Days side by side to find out and prepare for this year!
Which reports offer comparison reporting as a date feature?
Comparison reporting is available in almost every sales report, for Group Reporting and Individual Location/Outlet Reporting. Comparison is an available feature whenever you see it listed in the Date box of the Report Generator, like this:
The most popular reports for using the Comparison feature are:
- Group Sales Summary
- Category Sales Report
- Promotion Summary / Void Summary
- Hourly Sales Report
- Service Category
- Labor Summary / Hourly Labor
What kind of Comparisons are useful?
There are two kinds of Comparisons:
- Standard: Using the Standard Comparison date filter lets you see your sales performance year over year. You are able to see Daily, WTD, MTD and YTD comparisons in one report. Just select the time frames you are interested in comparing.
- Custom: Using a Custom Comparison you can select any two timeframes to compare against the figures for those periods in the previous year.
Daily
Setting your Standard Comparison to Daily will generate a report comparing yesterday's sales to the same Day last year (meaning a Wednesday will be compared to a Wednesday not the 15th to the 15th). This is a helpful daily benchmark compared to last year's performance.
WTD
All the sales so far this week, compared to sales to date of the same week last year. A popular choice is to include a Daily and WTD comparison on one report sent daily or pinned to a dashboard.
MTD
All the sales so far this month, compared to sales to date of the same month last year. A popular choice is to include a Daily and MTD comparison on one report sent daily or pinned to a dashboard.
YTD / Fiscal Periods to Date
All the sales so far this year, compared to sales to date of the same point last year.
Fiscal Periods can be set up in Settings and used as a date format in your reports as well.
Custom Range Comparisons
You can set custom dates to compare, for example an upcoming holiday that falls on a different date every year. This is not recommend as an emailed or dashboard report because the dates will not update.
For example: Mother's Day falls on a Sunday so the date is different every year. You can input the calendar date of the last 5 Mother's Days when planning and forecasting for this year's holiday.
Running a Comparison Report
Comparison reporting is especially helpful for holidays and seasonal operations or venues.
